  • 1 Notify your current landlord or real estate agent about your move-out date.
  • 2 Begin decluttering and sorting through your belongings to determine what you want to keep, sell, donate, or throw away.
  • 3 Start researching and collecting moving supplies such as boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and markers.
  • 4 Create a budget for your move and start gathering quotes from moving companies if applicable.
  • 5 Notify your utility companies (electricity, water, gas, internet, etc.) about your move and arrange for disconnection or transfer of services.
  • 6 Update your address with the post office, as well as with important institutions such as banks, insurance companies, and government offices.
  • 7 Start packing non-essential items that you won't need before the move, labeling each box with its contents and the room it belongs to.
  • 8 Make arrangements for childcare or pet care on the moving day if necessary.
  • 9 Arrange for a moving truck.
  • 10 Schedule a date for any necessary repairs or cleaning of your current home before moving out.
  • 11 Research and book a storage unit if you need temporary storage for some of your belongings.
  • 12 Notify friends and family about your move and ask for their assistance if needed.
  • 13 Pack an essentials box containing items you'll need immediately upon arrival at your new home (toiletries, change of clothes, bedding, basic kitchen supplies, etc.).
  • 14 Create a detailed inventory of your belongings for insurance purposes.
  • 15 Dispose of hazardous materials properly, such as cleaning products, paint, and batteries.
  • 16 Start packing essential items and furniture closer to the moving day.
  • 17 Confirm your moving date and time with the moving company or friends helping you.
  • 18 Arrange for the disconnection and installation of utilities at your new home.
  • 19 Clean your current home thoroughly, ensuring everything is in good condition for the next occupants.
  • 20 On the moving day, double-check that all boxes and furniture are loaded onto the moving truck or van.
  • 21 Do a final walkthrough of your old home to make sure nothing is left behind.
  • 22 Once you arrive at your new home, check that all your belongings have arrived safely.
  • 23 Begin unpacking and setting up your new home, starting with essential items and gradually working through the rest.
  • 24 Update your driver's license, vehicle registration, and voter registration with your new address.
  • 25 Take some time to explore and familiarize yourself with your new neighborhood.
